About the Event
From the soaring choral beauty of J.S. Bach to the youthful energy of Mendelssohn—and a healthy dose of musical comedy—this program offers something for every ear.
The Program
- Felix Mendelssohn: String Symphony No. 8 in D major
Composed when Mendelssohn was just 13 years old, this work is a marvel of youthful genius. It sparkles with “Alpine freshness” and sophisticated counterpoint that rivals the great masters. - J.S. Bach: Cantata 147, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben
One of Bach’s most joyful vocal works, this cantata was written for the Feast of the Visitation. It features the world-famous chorale “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (Jesus bleibet meine Freude), a piece of timeless grace and peace. - The Musical Comedy of P.D.Q. Bach
We take a detour into the “forgotten” (and hilarious) repertoire of P.D.Q. Bach. Created by the late satirist Peter Schickele, these pieces skewer classical pretensions with slapstick wit and “outrageous” musical jokes.
